The Disc to Digital feature has become available to all owners of Xbox One and Xbox Series consoles. It was tested by members of the Xbox Insider program for about a month, and now it has reached other players.

Digital copy instead of disk

If you insert a suitable Xbox One or Xbox Series X disc into your console, the system will offer to turn the game into a digital copy. The game is tied to your account, and the disk is no longer needed for verification every time you start the game.

The disc can be sold or donated

The digital license remains associated with the disc itself. The previous owner has the right to sell it or give it to a friend. The new owner will be able to go through the same procedure and get their own copy, and the previous owner's license will be revoked. It comes out almost like physical games, only without a disc drive in everyday play.

Games for console and PC

Games supported by Xbox Play Anywhere will also be available on PC via the Xbox app.To check which of your games are eligible, filter your library by Play Anywhere and look for the Disc to Digital icon.

Limitations

According to the Xbox support page, the feature works with most physical games across the two generations, but not all.Eligible games may vary due to technical reasons, licensing, publisher decisions and production.Players have already noticed SEGA projects among the compatible games: Persona, Yakuza and Sonic.

A handy little thing for those who have a lot of disks

A switch was added to the release version that prevents the disk from automatically starting the installation. This is useful if you are digitizing a whole stack at once and want the console to simply recognize the disc without downloading anything.

Before you start, it's worth taking a look at the Xbox support page: it contains error codes and tips in case something goes wrong.
