EA producer Jim Vessella showed materials for a possible anniversary re-release of Wing Commander 3. There is no formal announcement or release date yet.
Six hundred cassettes restored hope for quality videos
At the Portland Retro Gaming Expo, EA producer Jim Vessella spoke about the discovery of approximately 600 original video tapes in the company's archive.Among the materials were the original recordings for Wing Commander 3: Heart of the Tiger, a 1994 space simulator with many scenes with live actors.
Why Source Records Are Important to Wing Commander 3
Video inserts of the original game were produced taking into account the technical limitations of computers in the mid-nineties.Working with preserved master recordings potentially allows you to restore the image to a higher quality than simply increasing the resolution of old game files. However, the final quality depends on the condition of the materials and processing.
What is known about the anniversary edition
According to PC Gamer, plans for Wing Commander 3: Heart of the Tiger 30th Anniversary Edition were shown at the exhibition. This indicates that the project is in the works, but Electronic Arts has not yet announced a release date, platforms or cost. Therefore, it is premature to say that the reissue has already been officially presented for sale.
Why fans follow the EA archives
Wing Commander 3 is known for its combination of space combat and cinematic storytelling.Preserving the original footage is important not only for a potential remaster, but also for the history of the gaming industry: such materials show how major projects of the CD-ROM era were created.
