StarCraft is officially back, but not in the way you might expect after a multi-year hiatus.Blizzard announced STARCRAFT - open world shooter, which will again take place in the Koprulu sector. The release is scheduled for spring 2030.
This is not StarCraft III or a remaster of the old campaign. The company calls the project a new game with an original story.A cinematic was shown at BlizzCon, but there was no full gameplay yet.

StarCraft returns in a different genre
The main change is obvious from Blizzard's wording. After two big strategy games, the series moves on to open world and third-person shooting. At the same time, the studio does not abandon the familiar universe: the Koprulu sector is again announced, where the history of the Terrans, Zergs and Protoss unfolded.
It is still unknown who exactly you will play for and how open the world will be.Blizzard also didn't reveal the mission structure, character development, or the role of familiar factions. Therefore, it is too early to compare the project with specific modern shooters.

This is not an attempt to pass off the shooter as StarCraft III
The most important thing for RTS fans is that Blizzard did not call the game the third part of the strategy. The name on the announcement is simply STARCRAFT.This is a separate direction within the universe, and not a promise to replace the classical formula.
This clarification is important given the almost inevitable anticipation of StarCraft III.The last major story chapter of StarCraft II came out many years ago, so any big announcement for the series would automatically be perceived as the return of the RTS.Blizzard immediately chose a different path.

2030 is really far away
There are more than three years left before the announced release. That's why the lack of gameplay now suggests an early stage of public display rather than a hidden finished game.Spring 2030 is a target that may still change.
Blizzard applied a similar strategy to Diablo V, announced for the spring of 2029.This is still an important moment for StarCraft: the series again received an independent major game, and not just updates to StarCraft II.
