Previously, Microsoft mostly talked about Project Helix as the next Xbox console.Now we are talking about several devices that will work in the same ecosystem.

The company has not yet disclosed the composition of this family.But the general strategy is already visible.

What Microsoft has already confirmed

Project Helix is in development.

The system will be based on a special AMD processor.Microsoft is also preparing a new graphics architecture and the next generation of FSR.

The main feature of Helix is its support for two libraries at once.

The device must run Xbox and PC games.

This is not a rumor.Microsoft announced this back at GDC 2026.

The company also claims major improvements in ray tracing performance.But the exact characteristics have not yet been published.

Developers should receive the first alpha versions of the hardware in 2027.

This does not mean that the console will be released in 2027.Microsoft has not yet announced a retail launch date.

What does "device family" mean?

Here, for now, we need to separate facts and assumptions.

Microsoft has confirmed its own Project Helix console.

The company is now also talking about "device family".

But she did not explain which devices will be included in this line.

These may be different models of the same console.These may be portable devices.Partner products available.

The latter option seems logical because Xbox is already working with ASUS on ROG Xbox Ally.

But Microsoft has not yet confirmed the release of third-party Project Helix devices.

Therefore, now we can only say one thing: the next Xbox will not be limited to one box under the TV.

Xbox is getting closer to PC

This transition began before Project Helix.

Microsoft is already releasing Xbox Mode for Windows 11.

The mode launches the full-screen Xbox interface and is optimized for gamepad control.It works on desktops, laptops, tablets and portable devices.

ROG Xbox Ally takes the same approach.

The player receives an interface similar to a console, but the device remains a Windows computer.

Project Helix will continue this pattern.

Microsoft explicitly says that the system should run both console and PC games.

And this could change the way we think about Xbox the most.

Previously, the choice was simple: console or PC.

Now Microsoft wants to remove that boundary.

Price has become a separate issue

There's another reason why Microsoft might move away from one standard model.

The cost of components is rising.

In June, Xbox told employees that storage drive prices had increased dramatically.The company expects further increases in the cost of memory and data storage.

Microsoft has explicitly acknowledged that it needs a different approach to hardware production and new partnerships.

Asha Sharma also talks about the efficiency and affordability of future devices.

This goes well with the idea of family.

One user may choose a simpler model.

The other is an expensive system with high performance.

At least this approach seems logical.

But prices and specific configurations are still unknown.

What will happen to the disks?

Microsoft hasn't said yet whether Project Helix will have a disk drive.

This is a separate question.

The company has already begun preparing a system for converting physical games into digital format.

Starting August 31st, Xbox Insider members will be able to test the new feature.The player inserts a supported Xbox One or Xbox Series X disc into the console and receives digital rights to the game.

Microsoft says the system will support thousands of games at launch.

The physical disk then continues to work as before.

This feature does not confirm that the drive is abandoned in Project Helix.

But it shows the direction.

Microsoft wants the old library to work on new devices regardless of the purchase format.

What is still unknown

There is still little information about Project Helix.

Microsoft did not name:

  • release date;
  • price;
  • exact specifications;
  • number of models;
  • presence of a disk drive;
  • final design;
  • list of third party manufacturers.

Therefore, it is too early to discuss Helix as a finished product.

But the direction is already clear.

The next-gen Xbox won't just be a new version of the Series X.

Microsoft is building a platform that should work between console and PC.

And the word “family” is important here.

The next Xbox may look nothing like the old consoles

Xbox has been changing for a long time.

Games are released on different devices.Xbox Play Anywhere transfers purchases and saves between systems.Old Xbox games are gradually coming to PC.Windows gets console mode.

Project Helix aims to bring all of this together in one generation of hardware.

And there is a risk here.

If the system becomes too similar to a regular PC, part of the meaning of the console may disappear.

People buy a console because it is simple.

Connect it to the TV, install the game and play.

Microsoft will have to keep this simplicity while giving access to the capabilities of the PC.

This is a difficult task.

But if the company pulls it off, Project Helix could become the most unusual generation of Xbox in the brand's history.

So far, the main change has already occurred.

We are no longer waiting for one new console.We are waiting for a whole line of devices.

Which option is closer to you: one powerful Xbox for several years or several models with different prices and capabilities?
