Capcom's Satoru Nihei explained to PC Gamer why Onimusha: Way of the Sword switched to the RE Engine. The main argument is related to the combat: it was possible to cut off limbs and damage enemies in much more detail than in previous games in the series.
For a game about a samurai with a sword, this is an important detail. Each blow should leave a mark, and the enemy should react to where the blade landed. This is exactly the effect the authors achieve from their technology.

We have already discussed the ending of the game in passing the eighth part.
