Composer Austin Wintory, who wrote the music for Journey and Sword of the Sea, posted about 22 minutes of sketches for the next Mass Effect on YouTube. The game was canceled after BioWare closed, and now this is almost the only thing you can hear from its soundtrack.

A composer's dream project

On social networks, Wintory admitted that over the past couple of years he has been in serious negotiations with BioWare and EA to work on Mass Effect 5. He called it a “dream project” and the “white whale” of his career, and, according to him, he loves the series itself more than anyone else.

Idea: original music as a basis

The composer proposed taking the music of the first game, which was written by Jack Wall and Sam Hulick, as a starting point and developing it further. His plans included analog synthesizers and tighter orchestral work.Wintory himself calls this approach a love letter to the series, similar to what he did for Aliens: Fireteam Elite.

To show what it might sound like, he recorded about 20 minutes of music himself in Los Angeles, with synthesizers, vocals and a large orchestra.According to him, this is “pure musical research” without reference to the plot, about which nothing was known at that time.Whether he will eventually become the game's official composer is unclear, with IGN noting that the question remains open.

Farewell to the project

Wintory concluded his publication with thanks to his friends from BioWare and EA.Even just daydreaming in their sandbox was an honor, he said. For fans, this is another echo of a game that, apparently, will never be released: the community has already collected petition in defense of the series, and previously surfaced on the network details of the canceled Mass Effect, where the hero was sent into the Cold War 600 years after Shepard.
