Valve has once again made it clear why Steam Deck 2 has not yet been announced. The company doesn't want to release a new portable system just for the sake of the usual annual performance gains.
Engineer Pierre-Loup Griffais says the team is still deciding “how and when” to make a sequel. The main guideline is a noticeable generational leap without a serious sacrifice of autonomy and energy efficiency.

Memory deficit is not the main reason for waiting
When asked about the memory supply situation, Griffe replied that it “doesn’t particularly” affect the Steam Deck 2 plan. The company has previously said that it doesn’t see the point in updating the device in small steps.
That is, the current delay does not look like a transfer of an already finished console due to component prices.Valve is still deciding on the hardware foundation that will justify a separate generation.
The company wants to avoid compromising on the battery
A faster chip by itself does not solve the problem if it makes the portable system heat up more or significantly reduces operating time. Therefore, Valve is looking for a combination of performance and efficiency, rather than maximum benchmark numbers.
There is still no release date. For now, Steam Deck 2 remains a confirmed development direction and not a product with an announced date or specifications.
