Nintendo has announced Metroid Ravenous, a new 2D entry in the series for Nintendo Switch 2. The game will be released on January 28, 2027.

Samus Aran finds herself stranded on an unknown moon after being attacked by a mysterious group. To get out of the underground ruins, she will have to look for new abilities, fight large opponents and gradually open a path through interconnected locations.

Samus will be able to absorb enemies

The main new skill is related to Samus' awakened Metroid instincts.Nintendo explicitly describes the mechanic as the ability to "devour" opponents.Judging by the first frames, it will become part of the combat system, and not just a plot feature.

The core is still the familiar elements of the series: exploring labyrinths, finding upgrades, shooting with an energy cannon, rockets and boss battles. But Ravenous places a noticeable emphasis on a more aggressive pace of combat.

Nintendo has not yet listed the developer on the game's official page. Therefore, it is too early to connect Ravenous with MercurySteam, which created Metroid Dread together with Nintendo - this remains a guess.

After Metroid Dread, the series returns to the classic 2D structure again, but as a standalone game for the Switch 2. At first glance, Ravenous looks not like a simple sequel to Dread, but an attempt to tie Samus' origins more closely with the combat mechanics.

What's more interesting to you about Ravenous - Samus' new ability or the return of full 2D Metroid?
