The last serialized Mega Man came out in 2018.

Since then, Capcom has released collections and brought back old games, but the new part of the classic series had to wait eight years.

At Gamescom 2026 Mega Man: Dual Override Finally they let me play.And after first impressions, the good news is that Capcom is not trying to remake Mega Man to fit modern trends.

It's still a challenging 2D platformer.It’s just that now the player has more ways to complete it.

The old Mega Man is instantly recognizable here

The basics haven't changed much.We run from left to right, jump between platforms, shoot with the Mega Buster and remember the location of the opponents.

The game still requires precision.Capcom could have made a bigger map, added dozens of side quests and turned the series into a modern action game, but the developers decided to keep the structure of the classic Mega Man.

Game director Shinya Ikuta explained in an interview Video Games Chronicle, that the main audience of Dual Override are long-time fans of the series.At the same time, the developers want to make entering the game more convenient for beginners.

Custom Chips change the rules, but not the game itself

The main innovation is called Custom Chips.These are additional modules that change the character's abilities.

  • fast shooting;
  • protective bubble;
  • hovering in the air;
  • other passing modifiers.

The player himself chooses the set before starting the level.Chips help you adjust the passage to your style and level of preparation.

If you can't make a difficult jump, you can take the ability to hover in the air.If you receive damage often, use additional protection.

However, Capcom does not remove the usual difficulty.Custom Chips give you more options, but don't make progress automatic.

Override gives you power, but it comes at a price

The second new system is called Override.

During the game, a special scale gradually fills up.Once activated, the hero temporarily removes the power limitation and gains enhanced abilities.

But you can't use Override all the time.After an overload, some of the character's capabilities temporarily stop working.

Therefore, the player has to choose the moment.You can spend a boost on a difficult area, save it for the boss, or take a chance now and then play with the restrictions for a while.

Proto Man is selectable again

Another important news is the return Proto Man.

He will become the second full-fledged game character.Capcom promises that Mega Man and Proto Man will differ not only in appearance, but also in their playstyle.

The developers explained that the return of Proto Man is also connected with the upcoming 40th anniversary of the series.After Mega Man 11, fans often asked why this character was not in the game at all.

The exact differences between the two heroes have not yet been fully revealed.But Capcom is upfront about different gameplay elements for each character.

Twinkle Girl looks like she's always been part of the series

A new Robot Master was shown at Gamescom - Twinkle Girl.

Her level is built around a night show and fireworks.During combat, she uses pyrotechnics and forces the player to constantly monitor attacks and position on the platform.

Capcom also showed off Astro Man from Mega Man 8. The company is yet to say how many older Robot Masters will appear in Dual Override.

And it's good that the game is still difficult

One of the big questions with the introduction of Custom Chips is whether Mega Man will become too simple.

First impressions say no.The game is still aimed at the long-time audience of the series, but gives newcomers more tools to overcome difficult areas.

This looks like the right approach.Mega Man's difficulty was never a problem in and of itself.It is important that the player understands the reason for the error and can try another method.

After Gamescom I'm looking forward to the new Mega Man even more

Before the show, Dual Override looked like a cautious comeback for the series.Now it is clear that Capcom is still changing the formula, but doing it without sudden movements.

Custom Chips give you more choice.Override adds risk.Proto Man offers a second style of play.

And under the new systems, the familiar Mega Man remains: platforms, robots, bosses, bright levels and the need to learn from your own mistakes.

Mega Man: Dual Override will be released in 2027 on Nintendo Switch 2, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One and PC.Capcom has not yet announced the exact date.

After eight years of waiting, a few more months no longer seems like a big deal.

What do you think of Mega Man: is it better to keep the classic formula or does the series need a more serious step forward?
