Creative Director Marathon Julia Nardin has denied the rumor that Bungie is allegedly going to combine Marathon and Destiny into one franchise. The source of the discussion was an anonymous “leak” that was distributed through social networks and Reddit.

"They will remain independent"

Nardin worked with both Destiny and Marathon, so she separately emphasized that the projects have the same creative Bungie DNA, but they are different intellectual properties. She also urged players not to accept any leak published online as confirmed information.

The refutation concerns specifically the idea of a plot or franchise combination of two series. It does not automatically confirm or deny other points in the same anonymous message.

Why did the rumor seem plausible at all?

Bungie is really changing the long-term direction of Marathon. The studio recently abandoned its strict seasonal schedule and moved the major Symbiosis update to December. It will feature a permanent PvE format, social space and other systems familiar to the audience of service games.

We analyzed separately new Marathon update plan and Symbiosis port. The similarity of individual systems to Bungie's experience in Destiny does not mean a shared universe: at the moment, the studio is outright saying the opposite.
