The review embargo for Gears of War: E-Day has been lifted, and ratings are strong but uneven. On Metacritic, the Xbox Series version has a score of 88 from 50 reviews, the PC version has an 84 from 27 reviews, and on OpenCritic an average score of 87 from 37 reviews, with 89% of critics recommending the game. All figures refer to the story campaign and are subject to change at the time of publication.
Strengths of E-Day
Critics agree that Gears' shooting and performances are again on point. The new movement system with jumping, sliding and climbing made firefights more vertical and dynamic, without destroying the usual cover mechanics.Particular praise was given to the relationship between Marcus Fenix and Dominic Santiago, the memorable moments of the campaign and the visual style. One reviewer calls E-Day the best game in the series.

Main complaints
The biggest controversy is about the open sections of the levels: according to critics, they take up 30 to 40% of the campaign and in some places sabotage the pace.Side missions most often come down to defending a position from waves of enemies. The AI of the allies, some protracted battles and variety outside the main cycle of skirmishes look weaker, and some critics complain about the performance. The story could have been stronger, according to many, with one reviewer calling it a step back from Gears 5.
Ratings vary greatly: the lowest we noticed was 3 out of 5, and one of the German publications gave it 100 out of 100. In addition, at the start the game does not capture the enemy as a human shield and duels with chainsaws, as the press wrote about with reference to The Coalition blog.
