The anniversary season of Hell's Legacy in Diablo IV turned out to be a much more literal return to origins than it seemed from the announcements.Players have reached Tristram from the first Diablo: Blizzard has restored the familiar layout, atmosphere and music, and then the route leads under the cathedral - all the way to Hell.
Tristram works as series memory
A new version of the city is presented through the memories of Deckard Cain.So Blizzard can almost directly quote the 1996 original without trying to explain why modern Sanctuary suddenly looks thirty years younger.
The strongest effect is created not by graphics, but by the combination of recognizable space and music. For players of the first Diablo, this instantly brings back the feeling of the central hub from which the descent under the cathedral began.

Anniversary is not just decoration
Hell's Legacy brings back Deckard Cain, Bhaal, Mephisto and Diablo, while Waking Nightmares uses key episodes from past games as the basis for new activities. In one version, the path repeats almost the entire structure of the first Diablo - from Tristram through the levels under the cathedral to the final clash.
We have already talked about the launch of Hell's Legacy and the Switch 2 version of Diablo IV.Now it becomes clearer how deeply the season uses the history of the series.

There is a trace of Diablo II
Players also discovered elements that reference Uber Tristram and the Pandemonium Event from Diablo II.This is no longer just a museum: familiar ideas are transformed into end-game challenges with the modern combat pacing of Diablo IV.
This approach allows Blizzard to simultaneously cater to the nostalgia of veterans and give new players context for why Tristram, Cain, and the three Master Evils are so important to the series.

Thirty years of history in one game
Anniversary Season shows the good side of the service model: the temporary or seasonal structure allows you to experiment with a legacy without having to build a separate remake. The question now is which of these activities will remain available after the season ends.
