Owlcat Games showed several more options for the origin of the character in Warhammer 40,000: Dark Heresy. In short footage you can see acolytes with different biographies, including a psyker and a native of the Astra Militarum. For a game about the Inquisition, this choice is important: a former soldier and a person who knows how to use the Warp must perceive the same dangers differently.

Psyker serves the Imperium under constant suspicion

A psyker is capable of harnessing the powers of the Warp, but this gift often comes at the price of mistrust and surveillance in the Imperium.Owlcat dedicated separate concept art to the new origin. The official description emphasizes how dangerous it is to open one's mind to otherworldly forces and how little trust even trained bearers of the gift receive.

There are other images of the acolyte in the show, including a military one.The developers promise to expand the full set of background stories for release. This is not to be confused with character class: origin explains the hero's background, while archetype determines his combat skills.

In beta you can already create your own acolyte

The current beta contains the first story act, except for the prologue. It provides five base archetypes: Warrior, Officer, Operative, Soldier, and Mystic for Sanctioned Psykers.Four origins and three homeworlds are also available. This is the confirmed content of the test version;the number of options in the finished game may be greater.

At the center of Dark Heresy is an investigation on behalf of a servant of the Inquisition. The player collects information, interrogates suspects, and decides who to trust.Unlike Rogue Trader, where the hero controls his own trading dynasty, the Acolyte is responsible to an authority that can punish mistakes.

What is known about the combat system

Turn-based encounters return, but Owlcat places an emphasis on squad morale, hero placement, and enemy vulnerabilities. Some companions hold extremely different views on heresy and acceptable means of combating it.The decision in the conversation can affect further investigation, so it is better not to evaluate the character only by the starting weapon.

The release date has not yet been announced. Dark Heresy is announced for PC and modern consoles, and Russian subtitles and interface are already listed on Steam. It's too early to discuss the final balance of backstories: the current footage shows the appearance and concept of the characters, and not a full table of all characteristics.
