Netflix wanted to get exclusive rights to films and TV series based on Xbox games, but the parties lacked several hundred millions. This was reported by journalist Matthew Belloni from the publication Puck.According to him, the streaming service offered $500 million over seven years, and Xbox head Asha Sharma and the business affairs team countered with an offer of $800 million for the same thing.
How the deal fell apart
The first person to approach Xbox was then-Netflix Chief Content Officer Bela Bajaria.Negotiations never reached the final stage.Bajaria left the company amid announced layoffs of thousands of employees, and Netflix CFO Spence Newman reportedly believed the deal was not worth $800 million. After this, the project completely lost its prospects.
It is unknown which games would be included in the agreement: some of the Xbox franchises have already gone to other studios.Amazon is preparing a series based on Wolfenstein and will soon show the third season of Fallout, and Paramount is making a film based on Call of Duty.

What happens next
Joint projects between Netflix and Xbox continue: animated series based on Minecraft and Diablo, as well as a film based on Gears of War, are being prepared. At BlizzCon 2026, Blizzard President Joanna Faries hinted that Overwatch and Warcraft could suffer the same fate.
In a statement to Puck, Xbox said interest in its intellectual property was at an all-time high, called Netflix a valuable partner and confirmed it was looking forward to TV series based on Minecraft and Diablo. In early October, Microsoft announced a new division, Xbox XP, that would develop franchises outside of video games.Instead of one huge deal, Xbox is now considering several smaller licensing agreements with different partners.
